A joint inspection survey by trade unions and the government reveals that most food producers in Zimbabwe are complying with covid-19 regulations but testing remains a challenge. Zimbabwe’s Federation of Food has embarked on countrywide impromptu inspections for covid-19 regulations compliance by food manufacturing and processing companies in the country.

THE food industry workers’ union has raised concerns over how its members are living in poverty while their directors are falling over each other to make Covid-19 donations to the government. The Federation of Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAWU) secretary general, Runesu Dzimiri said an average employer in the food industry was earning ZWL$2 500 per month, which translates to about US$40 on the black market.

TWO Bakers Inn employees in Harare who are members of the Johanne Marange apostolic sect risk losing their jobs after they declined to be tested for Covid-19 at work citing their religious beliefs. Bakers Inn recently tested all its employees for the novel pandemic but the two workers rejected to undergo the mandatory tests.

FEAR gripped Bakers Inn employees and management last week after 22 cases of suspected Covid-19 cases were observed when workers went through the now mandatory Covid-19 screening. However, there was a sigh of relief, at one of the largest bread manufacturers in the country, when all the 22 cases returned negative after retests.

Kindly be advised that a routine joint inspection by the Ministry of Labour,NSSA and FFAWUZ officials was carried out at Bakers Inn Harare plant today the 15th of May 2020. Furthermore,take notice that the inspection's main objective was to monitor compliance to stipulated Covid 19 guidelines and preventative measures as pronounced by World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health and Child Care. The inspections will be targeting companies in the food processing and allied industries seeking to figure preparedness and compliance in response to the outbreak of the novel virus at work places.

THE Food Federation and Allied Workers Union of Zimbabwe (FFAWUZ) has asked for government’s immediate intervention as most workers in the industry are working with no protective clothing during the current COVID-19 period. The organisation is an affiliate of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and has a strong membership of membership of 80 000 workers.
